White liquor is a strongly caustic kraft pulping solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfide (Na₂S), at about pH 13. It escaped when the storage tank failed. At that pH it causes deep caustic burns (liquefaction necrosis), and the sulfide can release hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas.
